A simple Google search for a community's name plus terms like "complaint," "lawsuit," "investigation," or "citation" can surface news coverage of serious problems that may not appear in official databases.

State health departments sometimes issue emergency orders, impose fines, or take licensing actions against communities with serious deficiencies. These actions are sometimes covered by local media. Finding this information before a tour is far better than discovering it after a parent has moved in.

Research the Ownership and Management Company

Many senior living communities are owned by large regional or national corporations. The parent company's track record across its portfolio can be informative.

Search for the ownership company's name plus "quality" and "inspection." Companies that consistently operate well-rated communities across multiple states are a better risk than those with a pattern of deficiencies across their portfolio.

Connect With Local Resources

Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) exist in every region of the United States and serve as local hubs for information about senior services. Staff at your local AAA are often knowledgeable about the local senior living market — which communities have good reputations, which have had recent problems, and what resources are available to help families navigate the search.

In Canada, provincial health authorities serve a similar function through their home and community care programs.

Create a Comparison Framework
